Trauma comes in many forms and there is a big difference between experiencing trauma and becoming traumatized.
You become traumatized when you feel that your life, your existence as you know it, is threatened.
It is a very personal experience, and what is traumatizing to one person, may be no big deal to the next. When you survive trauma, of any kind, it is very common to get “stuck” in that survivor mode.
It can even become part of your identify.
Perhaps you even often glorify it, to some degree. It can become a badge of honor to be a “survivor.” There are various groups that have formed that support this survivor identity….and they can be tremendous support. I believe, however, that while the triumph over the trauma is indeed glorious and should be identified and honored…..
You must move on!
To shift from surviving into thriving…..you must move on. That requires a shift in consciousness. In other words, you must change your thoughts. Survival is the energy of fear. You are fighting for your very existence on some level. You were put in a situation where you needed to pull back, gather your forces, and fight…..or…..flee. There are times both are necessary, both can be life saving, but once “safe” you must shift from protection to growth and move forward. Only then can you begin to thrive, to grow, and engage fully in your life.
How do you do that?
You must change your thoughts!
I have lived through trauma. I have been traumatized. It was the day I was able, and willing, to acknowledge it as a part of my life that, while it has helped me become the person I am today, it is not Who I Am Today. Today I choose to thrive.
