We are a society that has a “need to know” mentality. We just need to know. Uncertainty is not comfortable for us. We need to know what we will be doing tomorrow, next week, and next year. We need to know what time it is, what day it is, what month it is, what year it is. We need to know so that we know what we “should” be doing. We need to set goals, define obstacles, and make plans. Then we need to know that everything is going according to our plan. And most importantly…..we need to know that we are safe and that everything is okay……and those are two things we can never know.
Life is about embracing uncertainty. Of course, we make plans and have goals, but then we must learn to become unattached. Everything other than this moment is the future, and we don’t have the ability to predict the future. We also don’t know who we will be when that future time occurs. We want to know and control the outcome of our lives….yet if we are continually growing and changing so should the picture of our lives……and if we are unattached to it, the evolution of our lives may be far better than we had previously dreamed.
What is really feared is the unknown. That is the reason for clinging to plans so ferociously. Often the fear of the unknown, of uncertainty, is learned behavior. What was modeled for you? That the unknown is an adventure? That change is fun? Can you envision your life with the attitude of adventure? Whatever your circumstance in life may be right this minute, it could change in an instant. Most likely as a child you loved that aspect of life, the aspect of change. Sameness was boring. I bet you had insatiable curiosity. Where did it go? How about bringing it back? Now there is a plan!!!!!
